Why is International Yoga Day Celebrated?

Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuj,’ which means ‘unity’. The word yoga completely justifies its meaning as it brings the mind and body together. Yoga is one of the oldest (5000-year-old) treatments that offer a comprehensive approach to mental and physical well-being. International Yoga Day is celebrated on 21st June every year. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi proposed the idea of International Yoga Day during his speech at the 69th session of the General Assembly in 2014. Therefore, International Yoga Day is celebrated every year to spread awareness about the importance & benefits of Yoga.

The IDY observation is based on a harmonious mass yoga demonstration of a custom-made 45-minute protocol namely, Common Yoga Protocol (CYP).”

Benefits of Yoga

There are uncountable benefits of yoga. It is observed that the individuals who practice yoga on a daily basis tend to live longer and lead a healthy lifestyle. “Yoga is not a work-out, it is a work-in, and this is the point of spiritual practice to make us open up our hearts and focus our awareness so that we can know what we already know and be who we already are.” In short, yoga helps in-
