While communicating well with students in your online classes can help with retention, as educators, we should strive to do more than merely keep our students. To avoid the sensation of isolation that some online students have, we should offer them a sense of community while they are enrolled in online programs. The purpose of online communication is the same as it is in real-life conversation: by connecting and sharing information and communicating regarding different topics. When we communicate with students, whether in a face-to-face or online class, we are doing so to provide or receive information in order to gain an understanding between the two and establish relationships. 5. Be confident
